Gaze Patterns in Turn-Taking

چکیده
This paper investigates gaze patterns in turn-taking. We focus on differences between speaker changes resulting in silences and overlaps. We also investigate gaze patterns around backchannels and around silences not involving speaker changes.

Coordinating turn-taking with gaze
This paper explores the role of gaze in coordinating turn-taking in mixed-initiative conversation and specifically how gaze indicators might be usefully modeled in computational dialogue systems. We analyzed about 20 minutes of videotape of eight dialogues by four pairs of subjects performing a simple face-to-face cooperative laboratory task. We extend previous studies by explicating gaze patte...
متن کاملInfluence of Turn-Taking in a Two-Person Conversation on the Gaze of a Viewer
In natural conversation, the minimal gaps and overlaps of the turns at talk indicate an accurate regulation of the timings of the turn-taking system. Here we studied how the turn-taking affects the gaze of a non-involved viewer of a two-person conversation. The subjects were presented with a video of a conversation while their eye gaze was tracked with an infrared camera. As a control, the vide...
متن کاملPrediction of Turn-Taking by Combining Prosodic and Eye-Gaze Information in Poster Conversations
We investigate turn-taking behaviors in conversations in poster sessions. While the poster presenter holds most of the turns during sessions, the audience’s utterances are more important and should not be missed. In this paper, therefore, prediction of turn-taking by the audience is addressed. It is classified into two sub-tasks: prediction of speaker change and prediction of the next speaker. ...

متن کاملTurn-taking, feedback and joint attention in situated human-robot interaction
In this paper, we present a study where a robot instructs a human on how to draw a route on a map. The human and robot are seated face-to-face with the map placed on the table between them. The user’s and the robot’s gaze can thus serve several simultaneous functions: as cues to joint attention, turn-taking, level of understanding and task progression. We have compared this face-to-face setting...
